People Skills: The Real Tech Upgrade

In today's world, we are obsessed with updates. We’re always focused on upgrading our software, our tools, and tightening our security system. But there is one "operating system" that often gets ignored is “The Human OS”.

As an organization grows, the skills that got you through your degree for example coding, data or system design aren't enough to keep it forward. It doesn't matter which industry you work in. Be it in business, healthcare, education or any other field, expertise isn't sufficient enough. To really succeed, you need Emotional Intelligence (EQ). Think of EQ as the "patch" that fixes communication bugs and keeps the team from crashing when things get intense.

Just like a firewall protects a network, empathy protects a team from burning out. In a high-pressure environment where one tiny mistake can take down a whole system, stress levels are naturally high.

A person with high EQ doesn't just see a "late project." They will see a colleague who might be hitting a wall or feeling overwhelmed. Thus, when we practice empathy, we create a space where it’s okay to say, "I’m stuck" or "I need help." This lets us fix the problem together before the person, not just the computer, shuts down. However, it is not focusing only on the leader or manager itself. As a team, regardless of the role or level you are in the organization, you also need to build this kind of environment and culture.

For example, tech teams have to talk to everyone like sales, clients and managers. Most of the time, the biggest "bugs" in a project aren't in the code but they’re in the communication. Listen to understand. High-EQ teams don’t just wait for their turn to speak. They listen to the intention behind the words. This ensures that a technical request doesn't get lost in translation.

Fix the problem, not the blame. When a deployment fails, EQ helps the team focus on how to fix it rather than pointing fingers. A "blame-free" culture is much faster at solving problems.

You could be the most skilled one in the room, but if you can’t manage your own stress or talk to your teammates, you’ll find it is difficult. Leadership isn't only about titles or authority. It's about managing the team's energy.

  • Can you keep your head on straight when the system goes down at 4:00 PM on a Friday? That’s self-regulation.
  • Can you give feedback in a way that helps someone grow rather than feel discouraged? That’s emotional maturity.
  • Can you handle complicated disagreement without making it turn to conflict? That’s where real leadership happens.

As AI starts taking over more of the technical heavy lifting, the value of human EQ is only going to go up. A good company, don’t just hire people for what they know but also hire them for how they treat others.

Because at the end of the day, code is written by people and also for people. If people aren't working well together, the code probably won't be either.
